AN ECONOMICS POINT: 09. The reduction in fees.
AUTHOR: Sandro Trento.
In recent weeks, the Berlusconi government has launched its typical policy promises. He promised that it would reduce rates by 5 to 2, going to a situation with one at 22% and 33%. Over a few days we discovered that, as usual, it was a promise and then backed off.
is not the first time. In October the government had announced during the national meeting of the board the craft, which would abbolito IRAP, a small business taxes that much hate. Even that was a promise.
E 'in 1994, Berlusconi promises to reduce taxes, filling the Italian cities with large banners that read "Less taxes for everyone." In fact, in 2009 the tax burden has reached its historical high, we talk about 44% of GDP.
learn continuously increasing the imposts and taxes, but today we find that the government has just introduced a new tax on personal computers, set-top box, the pen drive and all the digital tools that can be used to record music and video. Taxes are not diminishing, if anything, are increasing.
The question we ask is: you can imagine to cut taxes without reducing government spending? Remember that the Berlusconi government was able to increase the Italian public debt of ten percentage points last year, from 105% to 115% of GDP in 2009.
The lords of the government launch promises to reduce taxes without explaining how they would finance such a reduction. We're talking about a total figure of the order of 20 to 25 billion euro, an enormous sum. The real question is: how could you imagine doing this kind of reform without reducing public spending? If this is not done by a reduction in public spending, the situation would be a further increase on a permanent, public debt, at the risk of leading the country towards financial bankruptcy, that predict a scenario similar to that of Argentina.
Perhaps at this moment is not necessary to imagine a reform in the direction of the rates announced by Berlusconi. The real emergency is to increase the purchasing power of poorer families. The interventions that would be needed at this time should be oriented to reduce taxes only for the poorest families.
The second emergency, on which we have called attention several times, is to allow all workers and young people without work have an adequate unemployment benefits, putting everyone on an equal footing before the current crisis, a reform of social safety nets.
These are the priorities for Italy of Values. The rest are fairy tales and promises from a government that now has zero credibility.
